The main town (Zante town) much of which was originally destroyed in an earthquake in 1953, has been rebuilt in traditional style and is the historic and cultural centre of the island, home to large squares, museums and churches. There are plenty of shops to browse in with bars and tavernas offering real Greek hospitality.
You don't have to stray far from the tourist centres to find the "real" Zakynthos, immersed in centuries of tradition.
A wonderful day to be had in Zante Town where boutiques offer jewellery, perfume and designer labels alongside quality Greek handcrafted items (leather, lace, pottery etc). There are ample shops in all resorts for any traditional purchases even though the Island is better known for sun, sand, sea and scenery.
The beaches in Zante are some of the best around, rivalling any in the Greek Islands. The soft sandy beaches and clear blue waters mean they are perfect for families with young children, whilst blissfully discreet coves prove popular hideaways. Long stretches of sand allow holidaymakers to enjoy a range of water sports, suiting novices and pros alike. Famous sightseeing spots such as "Smugglers Cove" with its shipwreck, now sunken in sand, and the "Blue caves" frequent the Island's coastline and provide the views worthy of a postcard.
